On the marriage certificate of Thomas Freebody and Elizabeth Bannister states Thomas' father is named John Freebody with the occupation shown as a'Victualler'.
John married Ann Balding in Newbury on 9th December 1804.
John was a bargeman at this time, and resided at Newbury Berkshire. (Sarum
Marriage Licence Bonds). On the baptism record for his son Thomas, it states
that John was a boatmaster. The parish record that refers is for Froxfield
in Wiltshire. Froxfield is now on the Berkshire / Wiltshire border. The Kennet
and Avon canal runs alongside. It is possible that John navigated along this
canal. (See link in the 'Family Names List' to see how the 21st Century Kennet
and Avon canal looks)
His wife Ann died in 1813 (not known if as a result of childbirth of Thomas),
another researcher has quoted parish records giving Ann as buried at Froxfield.
In the nearby village of Kintbury (very small village as was Froxfield), a
widower John Freebody married a widow Caroline Gossington on approx 8th June
1814. Caroline died at Kintbury on the 3rd or 5th February 1820 aged 43 years.
On approx the 29th May 1820, a widower John Freebody aged 43, a publican residing
at Kintbury married a spinster Catherine Hemming aged 34 residing at Kintbury.
John Freebody was buried at St Mary's Kintbury on 26th May 1831 age 54.
